In 1292, Edward I commissioned the construction of a formidable twin-towered gatehouse at St Briavels Castle, enhancing its defences against Welsh incursions. This period also saw the castle's transformation into a major production centre for crossbow bolts, utilizing the abundant local iron from the Forest of Dean to supply weapons for his military campaigns. (english-heritage.org.uk) By the 18th century, the castle's role shifted to that of a debtors' prison, a function it maintained until 1842. Following extensive restoration in the late 19th century, St Briavels Castle reopened as a youth hostel in 1948, a purpose it continues to serve today. (forestofdeanhistory.org.uk)
