## Portland Castle
Portland Castle, constructed between 1539 and 1541 under Henry VIII's orders, was designed to defend the Portland Roads anchorage against potential invasions. Built from Portland stone, the castle features a fan-shaped central tower flanked by two angular wings, with a forward gun battery facing the sea. Initially armed with eleven artillery pieces, it operated alongside Sandsfoot Castle to protect the area. (english-heritage.org.uk)
During the English Civil War, the Royalists captured the castle, enduring two sieges before surrendering to Parliament in 1646. Post-war, it was repurposed as a private residence, notably by the Manning family in the 19th century, who enhanced its interiors and gardens. (english-heritage.org.uk)
The castle reverted to military use in 1869, serving as accommodation for officers until 1999. In 1955, it opened to the public, showcasing its 16th-century features. Managed by English Heritage, it attracted a record 30,000 visitors in 2023. (english-heritage.org.uk)
