In 1641, Humphrey Weld, a grandson of a wealthy London merchant, purchased Lulworth Castle from Thomas Howard, 3rd Viscount Howard of Bindon. The Weld family, devout Roman Catholics, transformed the castle into a centre of Catholic life in England. In 1786, they constructed St Mary's Chapel within the grounds, the first free-standing Catholic chapel built for public worship since the Reformation.
