Grosmont Castle, established by the Normans in the late 11th century, was initially a timber fortification designed to secure the route from Wales to Hereford. In 1201, King John granted the castle to Hubert de Burgh, who began its reconstruction in stone, adding a hall block, curtain wall, gatehouse, and mural towers. The castle's strategic importance diminished after Edward I's conquest of Wales in 1282, and it was besieged during the Glyndŵr Rising in 1405. By the 16th century, it had fallen into disuse and ruin. The castle was placed into the care of the state in 1922 and is now managed by the Cadw Welsh heritage agency. (en.wikipedia.org)
