## Ye Olde Chequers Inn
Ye Olde Chequers Inn, located at 122 High Street in Tonbridge, Kent, is a Grade II* listed building dating back to the late 15th century. An inn has stood on this site since at least 1264. The name "Chequers" is believed to derive from "Exchequer," indicating a historical connection to fee-gathering for the lords of the nearby castle. (tonbridgehistory.org.uk) The building is renowned for its timber-framed architecture, with three storeys and five windows, built in four sections, two projecting and two recessed. (heritage.kent.gov.uk) In the 16th century, a room on the first floor was possibly used as a Justices' room, and a hangman's noose once dangled from a strong oak signpost outside, reflecting the legal punishments carried out nearby. (tonbridgehistory.org.uk) Today, the inn operates as a traditional pub, known for its friendly atmosphere, original beams, and views of Tonbridge Castle from its beer garden. (bar-trek.com)
