## Buxton Crescent

In 1780, the 5th Duke of Devonshire commissioned the construction of Buxton Crescent, a Grade I-listed Georgian building designed by John Carr of York. This architectural masterpiece aimed to establish Buxton as a fashionable spa town, rivaling Bath. Completed in 1789, the Crescent featured two hotels, private lodging houses, and an Assembly Room, serving as the social hub for visitors seeking the therapeutic benefits of Buxton's thermal waters. Over the centuries, the building has undergone various transformations, including serving as a hospital and council offices. After a £50 million restoration, it reopened in October 2020 as a luxury 5-star hotel, spa, and visitor experience, seamlessly blending its rich history with modern amenities. (visitbuxton.co.uk)
