In 1098, King Edgar of Scotland granted the lands of Coldingham to the Church of Durham, leading to the construction of a church dedicated to St. Mary, consecrated in 1100. This church evolved into Coldingham Priory, a Benedictine establishment that became one of Scotland's wealthiest religious houses, with extensive land holdings and a thriving monastic community. The priory's influence peaked in the 14th century, but it faced significant challenges during the Scottish Reformation and subsequent conflicts. Despite these hardships, the priory's choir survived and now serves as the parish church of Coldingham, continuing to serve the community today. (coldinghamparish.co.uk)
