## Wolsey's Gate
In 1528, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, born in Ipswich, initiated the construction of a grand college in his hometown, intended to rival the likes of Eton and Winchester. The project began with the building of Wolsey's Gate, a Tudor-style water gate designed for ceremonial river arrivals. However, Wolsey's fall from power in 1529 halted the college's development, and the remaining materials were repurposed for other royal projects. Today, Wolsey's Gate stands as the sole surviving remnant of this ambitious educational endeavour. (britainexpress.com)
