## Royal Liver Building

In 1907, the Royal Liver Assurance Society, established in Liverpool in 1850, commissioned the construction of a new headquarters to accommodate its growing workforce. Designed by architect Walter Aubrey Thomas, the Royal Liver Building was completed in 1911 and was among the first major buildings globally to utilize a reinforced concrete frame. Standing at 98.2 meters, it was the tallest building in Europe at the time of its completion. The building's two clock towers are topped with copper Liver Birds, mythical creatures that have become iconic symbols of Liverpool. In 1953, electronic chimes were installed as a memorial to members of the Royal Liver Assurance who died during the World Wars. The building remained the head office for Royal Liver Assurance until its merger with the Royal London Group in 2011. In 2016, it was sold for the first time in its history, and in 2019, a visitor attraction was opened, allowing the public to tour the West Clock Tower for the first time in its then 108-year history.
