## Peel Castle

In 1098, King Magnus III of Norway, known as Magnus Barefoot, established a timber fort on St Patrick's Isle, marking the beginning of Peel Castle's history. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a wooden stronghold to a formidable stone fortress. In the early 14th century, the majority of its walls and towers were constructed using local red sandstone, enhancing its durability. The castle's strategic importance was underscored by its role as a royal residence and military stronghold. Within its walls stood the Cathedral of St German, whose ruins are still visible today. Archaeological excavations have uncovered significant finds, including the 10th-century grave of the "Pagan Lady," which contained a well-preserved Viking necklace and a cache of silver coins dating from about 1030. Today, Peel Castle stands as a testament to the Isle of Man's rich Viking heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past.
