In 1609, George Luttrell commissioned the construction of the Yarn Market, an octagonal timber structure, to shelter merchants trading wool and cloth in Dunster's High Street. This market house, measuring 9.4 metres in diameter, featured a central stone pillar supporting a timber framework and a slate roof with a wooden lantern and weather vane. The building's design included dormer windows and a low wall with vertical timber supports, providing both shelter and security for traders. Notably, one of its roof beams bears a hole from cannon fire during the English Civil War, when Dunster Castle was besieged for five months under Colonel Wyndham. Following the conflict, the Yarn Market was restored in 1647 by Francis Luttrell. Today, it stands as a testament to Dunster's rich wool trading heritage. (english-heritage.org.uk)
