In 1610, King James I granted Bamburgh Castle to Sir Claudius Forster, the castle's last royal keeper, in recognition of his long-standing service. This marked the end of over 1,200 years of royal ownership, and the castle transitioned into private hands. Facing the financial burden of maintenance, the Forster family allowed the castle to fall into disrepair, and it became largely uninhabitable. (bamburghcastle.com)
In 1894, the castle was purchased by industrialist Lord Armstrong, who embarked on extensive restoration efforts, returning it to its former glory. Today, Bamburgh Castle stands as a testament to its rich history, attracting visitors from around the world. (bamburgh.org.uk)
