In 1295, Roger Mortimer de Chirk constructed Chirk Castle as part of Edward I's fortifications along the Welsh-English border. Serving as the administrative centre for the Marcher Lordship of Chirkland, it was strategically positioned to oversee the Ceiriog Valley. (nationaltrust.org.uk) The castle underwent significant alterations in the 16th and 17th centuries, including the addition of mullioned and transomed windows. During the English Civil War, it suffered partial demolition but was subsequently rebuilt. In 1593, Sir Thomas Myddelton purchased the castle for £5,000, approximately £18 million in today's terms.
