## Greenan Castle
In 1602, Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culzean was ambushed and murdered near Greenan Castle, a tragic event that inspired Sir Walter Scott's play "An Ayrshire Tragedy". (en.wikipedia.org) Originally a promontory fort, the site evolved into a motte-and-bailey in the 12th century. In the 15th century, the Lords of the Isles constructed a stone tower here. The Kennedy family acquired the castle in 1766, after which it ceased to be a residence and gradually fell into ruin. (en.wikipedia.org)
