About Staithes, North Yorkshire

Staithes is a historic fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast, known for its tightly packed cottages, narrow streets and steep lanes leading down to the harbour. Much of the old village retains its 18th and 19th-century character, making historic photographs of Staithes particularly interesting to compare with the village today.

Fishing shaped Staithes for centuries and during the 1800s it became one of the largest fishing ports in the North East. The village also has a connection with Captain James Cook, who worked in Staithes as a young apprentice before moving to Whitby and beginning his career at sea.
