In 1876, Newcastle's Swing Bridge, designed by Sir William Armstrong, revolutionised river crossings by allowing large ships to pass while maintaining a vital transport link across the River Tyne. The bridge's innovative hydraulic mechanism, powered by high-pressure pumps, enabled it to swing 90 degrees to accommodate vessels. Remarkably, the original hydraulic engines installed by Armstrong remain in use today. The bridge's busiest year was 1924, with 6,000 swings, but by 2019, it was only required to turn occasionally for yachts and pleasure craft. In 2026, the Swing Bridge celebrated its 150th anniversary, highlighting its enduring significance in Newcastle's industrial heritage. (new.newcastle.gov.uk)
