In 1771, a group of Staffordshire investors initiated the construction of Speedwell Cavern, aiming to exploit lead deposits beneath Castleton's Winnats Pass. They drove a 200-metre horizontal adit into the hillside, but the lead veins proved insufficient, leading to the mine's closure by 1790. During mining, workers discovered a natural limestone cavern and a vertical shaft, now known as the Bottomless Pit, which descends approximately 150 metres. After mining ceased, the flooded adit became accessible by boat, offering visitors a unique underground journey through the flooded mine workings. Today, Speedwell Cavern remains a popular tourist attraction, showcasing its geological features and mining history. (minearchive.co.uk)
