In 1915, Scarborough's South Bay unveiled the South Bay Bathing Pool, a pioneering tidal pool designed by engineer Harry W. Smith. Measuring 330 feet by 165 feet, it was among the largest in Europe, filled with fresh seawater brought in by the tides. The pool featured changing facilities, a diving board, and a water slide, and was part of the town's sea defences. It hosted major swimming events, aqua shows, and diving displays from its 32-foot high diving board. The pool remained popular with locals and visitors for decades but fell out of fashion as swimmers turned to the relative luxury of heated indoor facilities. Visitor numbers declined, the pool fell into disrepair, and was finally closed for good in 1989. (yorkshire.com)
