In 1738, Charles Stuart, the fifth Earl of Traquair, commissioned the Bear Gates at the end of the avenue leading to Traquair House. These gates were adorned with sculptures of bears holding the family crest. In 1745, after Bonnie Prince Charlie's visit, the Earl vowed they would remain closed until a Stuart king was crowned in London. Consequently, the gates have remained sealed since then, earning the nickname "Steekit Yetts." (britainexpress.com)
