In 1827, Nottingham's Market Place was a bustling hub, newly paved and covering approximately five and a half acres. It was renowned as one of the finest in England, serving as the focal point for the city's markets and fairs. The Exchange Hall, a prominent building facing west, was a notable feature of the square during this period. (nottshistory.org.uk)

The Market Place's significance continued into the 20th century. In 1926, the Nottingham Exchange was demolished, and the current Council House was constructed on its site. This redevelopment led to the redesign of the square, which was completed in 1927, featuring several platforms and a central procession way. (en.wikipedia.org)

The square has also been the site of significant events, including the annual Goose Fair, which was held there until 1928. The market's role as a central gathering place has remained a constant throughout its history, reflecting its enduring importance to Nottingham's community and heritage. (en.wikipedia.org)
