## Market Place, Durham

In 1852, Durham's Market Hall opened, replacing the earlier timber guildhall and marking a significant development in the city's commercial history. This hall, designed by architect Philip Charles Hardwick, was constructed between 1849 and 1851 and opened in December 1852. (durhamcity.live) The site chosen was itself steeped in history: the hall stands on the ground of New Place, the medieval and Tudor town house of the Nevilles, Earls of Westmorland, who forfeited the property to the Crown after the failed Rising of the North in 1569. (durhamcity.live) The Market Hall is described by Nikolaus Pevsner as "interior mostly with the usual cast-iron roof in a series of pitches on cast-iron columns, but stone vaulted at the north end." (en.wikipedia.org) Today, the Market Hall continues to serve as a vibrant hub, hosting over 50 traders and attracting more than 2 million visitors annually. (en.wikipedia.org)
