## Hurst Cross, Ashton-under-Lyne

In 1868, the Hurst Cross was erected at the junction of Queen's Road, King's Road, and Hurst Cross in Ashton-under-Lyne. Designed by local architect John Eaton, this Latin cross on a square pedestal commemorated a former cross at the site. Funded by local businessmen and members of the Hurst Local Board, the foundation stone was laid by Oldham Whittaker on Easter Monday, 1868, in a ceremony that included a dinner for 170 attendees at the Hurst Mechanics' Institute. The cross was completed within four months and handed over to the Hurst Local Board in October 1869. (manchestervictorianarchitects.org.uk)
