In 1822, Liverpool's Great Charlotte Street became home to St John's Market, a pioneering covered market hall designed by John Foster Jr. This innovative structure, completed in February 1822, was among the first of its kind in the UK, setting a precedent for urban market design. (outinliverpool.co.uk) The market's location between Great Charlotte Street and Market Street made it a central hub for commerce in the city. Over the years, the area saw significant development, including the establishment of Blacklers department store at the corner of Elliot Street and Great Charlotte Street in 1908. Blacklers was renowned for its lavish Christmas grotto and its iconic rocking horse, Blackie, which is now displayed in the Museum of Liverpool. (en.wikipedia.org) Despite being severely damaged during the Blitz of May 1941, Blacklers reopened in 1953. The original St John's Market was demolished in 1964 to make way for the St Johns Shopping Centre, reflecting the area's ongoing evolution. (outinliverpool.co.uk) Today, Great Charlotte Street continues to be a vibrant part of Liverpool's city centre, lined with a mix of shops, pubs, and eateries, and remains a testament to the city's rich commercial heritage.
