In 978, King Edward the Martyr was assassinated at Corfe Castle, a pivotal event in its early history. Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the castle underwent significant enhancements during the reigns of King John and Henry III, including the construction of the Gloriette, a luxurious royal residence. During the English Civil War, Lady Mary Bankes successfully defended the castle against Parliamentarian forces in 1643. However, in 1646, the castle was captured and subsequently ordered to be demolished by Parliament. In 1982, the Bankes estate, including Corfe Castle, was bequeathed to the National Trust, which has since undertaken extensive conservation efforts to preserve the site. (nationaltrust.org.uk)
