## Calshot Castle
Calshot Castle, constructed between 1539 and 1540 by Henry VIII, was part of his coastal defences against potential invasions from France and the Holy Roman Empire. Built on Calshot Spit, it featured a central keep surrounded by a curtain wall and moat, housing a garrison of 16 men and up to 36 artillery guns. (en.wikipedia.org) The castle survived the English Civil War and underwent significant modernisation in the 1770s. In the 19th century, it served as a base for the coastguard to combat smuggling. During the First World War, Calshot Castle became a seaplane base, hosting the Schneider Trophy air races from 1929 to 1931. It continued to serve as a seaplane base until its closure in 1961. Today, the castle is managed by English Heritage and offers visitors a glimpse into its rich history. (hants.gov.uk)
