In 1879, Benjamin Henry Blackwell established Blackwell's Bookshop at 50 Broad Street, beginning in a modest 12-foot-square room. The shop expanded over time, becoming Oxford's leading bookshop. (en.wikipedia.org) The street's one remaining pub, a 16th or 17th-century timber-framed building next to Blackwell's, is appropriately called the White Horse. (en.wikipedia.org) In 1947, the first Oxfam charity shop opened at 17 Broad Street, continuing to operate today. (en.wikipedia.org) A granite cross in the road opposite Balliol College marks the location where the Protestant Oxford Martyrs—Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley on 16 October 1555, and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer on 21 March 1556—were burnt at the stake just outside the old city wall.
