Bridge House in Ambleside, built in the 17th century, was constructed by the Braithwaite family to access their lands across Stock Ghyll and to store apples from their orchards. (britainexpress.com) Over the years, it has served various purposes, including a counting house for nearby mills, a tea-room, a weaving shop, a cobbler's, a chair maker's, and even a home to a family of eight. (britainexpress.com) In 1926, local residents, including Beatrix Potter's husband, William Heelis, raised funds to purchase and donate the building to the National Trust, ensuring its preservation. (britainexpress.com) Today, Bridge House stands as a Grade I listed building and serves as an information centre for the National Trust. (heritagerecords.nationaltrust.org.uk)
