## Bowood House

In 1914, Bowood House in Wiltshire was transformed into an Auxiliary Red Cross Hospital under the direction of Maud, 5th Marchioness of Lansdowne, following the death of her son at Ypres. (countrylife.co.uk) The house, a Grade I listed Georgian country residence, has been the seat of the Fitzmaurice family since 1754. (en.wikipedia.org) Notably, in 1774, Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in a laboratory at Bowood. (britainexpress.com) The estate's extensive grounds, designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown, feature a lake, waterfall, and a Doric temple. (insidewiltshire.co.uk) Today, Bowood House continues to serve as a family residence and a public attraction, offering a glimpse into England's aristocratic past. (britishtraveljournal.com)
