Wynard's Hospital, established in 1435 by William Wynard, Recorder of Exeter, provided accommodation for the poor and sick. The complex comprises twelve two-storey almshouses and a chapel, all constructed from Heavitree stone around a cobbled courtyard. Restored in 1863 by Edward Ashworth, the buildings have been repurposed over time, serving as offices for Exeter City Council and, more recently, converted into private dwellings. (en.wikipedia.org)
Another significant institution is the Exeter Homes Trust, founded over 900 years ago in the 11th century. The Trust manages 141 almshouses across eight locations in Exeter, offering accommodation to local residents over 55 who are capable of independent living. The Trust's properties range from Victorian to contemporary designs, with recent developments including the remodelling of Grendon Road Almshouses, completed in phases in March 2024 and March 2025.
