In 1550, Lindisfarne Castle was completed on Holy Island, Northumberland, using stones from the nearby Lindisfarne Priory. Its strategic position atop Beblowe Crag made it a formidable fortification against potential Scottish invasions. Over the centuries, the castle's military significance waned, and by the late 19th century, it had fallen into disrepair. In 1901, Edward Hudson, founder of *Country Life* magazine, acquired the castle and commissioned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens to transform it into a comfortable residence. Lutyens' restoration preserved the castle's rugged character while introducing Arts and Crafts elements. Garden designer Gertrude Jekyll also contributed, creating a walled garden that flourishes with summer blooms. In 1944, the National Trust took stewardship of Lindisfarne Castle, ensuring its preservation for future generations. (nationaltrust.org.uk)
