In 1865, Algernon Percy, the 4th Duke of Northumberland, commissioned architect Anthony Salvin to restore Alnwick Castle, aiming to return its exterior to a more medieval appearance. Salvin's work included the addition of the Prudhoe Tower and the Great Kitchen. Simultaneously, Italian artists Luigi Canina and Giovanni Montiroli were employed to redesign the State Rooms in an opulent Italianate style, reflecting the Duke's preference for Renaissance aesthetics.
