## St Mary's Church, Astbury

St Mary's Church in Astbury, Cheshire, traces its origins to the 12th century, with the earliest surviving feature being a round-arched doorway from around 1150. The church's unique trapezoidal design, wider at the west end, was developed over the 13th and 14th centuries. Notable interior elements include a 14th-century effigy of a knight in the Lady Chapel and a fragment of a Saxon cross embedded in the exterior wall. The detached tower, topped with a lofty spire, was constructed in the mid-14th century. A significant restoration in 1862 by Sir George Gilbert Scott removed plaster from the walls, revealing wall paintings and the royal arms of Henry VII. The church remains an active parish church within the Diocese of Chester, serving the community for centuries. (britainexpress.com)
