In 1945, the Reichstag building in Berlin became a symbol of the end of World War II when Soviet soldiers raised the red flag of the Soviet Union atop its roof on April 30, 1945, signifying the defeat of Nazi Germany. (berlin.de) The building, constructed between 1884 and 1894 by architect Paul Wallot, had been severely damaged during the war, with its dome destroyed and the plenary chamber gutted by fire. (berlin.de) Following the war, the Reichstag stood in ruins, symbolizing the division of Berlin during the Cold War. In 1990, after German reunification, the building underwent extensive renovations under British architect Sir Norman Foster, culminating in its reopening in 1999 as the seat of the German Bundestag. (berlin.de) Today, the Reichstag stands as a testament to Germany's tumultuous history and its journey towards democracy.
