In 1945, the Brandenburg Gate stood amidst the devastation of Berlin, its Quadriga sculpture destroyed during the war. The gate itself suffered significant damage but remained intact. In 1956, East and West Berlin authorities collaborated to restore the Quadriga, using a plaster cast from 1942 to recreate the sculpture. The restoration was completed on 14 December 1957. (en.wikipedia.org) During the Cold War, from 1961 to 1989, the gate was sealed off by the Berlin Wall, symbolising the city's division. Following the Wall's fall in 1989, the Brandenburg Gate became a powerful symbol of German reunification. (visitberlin.de) Today, it stands as a testament to Berlin's tumultuous history and its journey towards unity.
