## Sackville College

In 1609, Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset, bequeathed £1,000 to establish an almshouse for the poor in East Grinstead. The construction of Sackville College began around 1616 and was completed by 1619. The building, crafted from local sandstone, features a central courtyard and a Great Hall with an original hammer-beam roof. Over the centuries, the college has provided sheltered accommodation for the elderly and remains a Grade I listed building. Notably, Reverend John Mason Neale, warden from 1846 to 1866, composed the Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas" during his tenure.
