In 1834, a devastating fire destroyed most of the Palace of Westminster, including the House of Commons Chamber. The reconstruction, led by architect Charles Barry, began in 1840 and was completed in 1876. The new design featured a Gothic Revival style, with the House of Commons Chamber completed in 1852. During World War II, the palace suffered bomb damage, notably in 1941, when the Commons Chamber was destroyed by incendiary bombs. It was rebuilt in a simplified style and reopened in 1950. In 1970, the palace was designated a Grade I listed building, and in 1987, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As of 2026, the palace is undergoing extensive restoration, with plans for a complete refurbishment starting no sooner than 2025. (parliament.uk)
