## Milton's Cottage

In 1665, during the Great Plague, John Milton sought refuge in Chalfont St Giles, where he completed his epic poem "Paradise Lost" and began "Paradise Regained." The cottage, built in the late 16th century, is the only surviving residence of the poet. In 1887, a public subscription, initiated by Queen Victoria, saved the cottage from demolition, leading to its establishment as a museum. Today, it houses an extensive collection of 17th-century first editions of Milton's works and is open to the public. (miltonscottage.org)
