## Belle Tout Lighthouse
In 1828, a temporary wooden lighthouse was erected atop Beachy Head cliffs to safeguard sailors from frequent shipwrecks. This led to the construction of the permanent granite Belle Tout Lighthouse, completed in 1834. Its elevated position, however, rendered it less visible during foggy conditions, prompting the establishment of the Beachy Head Lighthouse at the cliff's base in 1902. The original lighthouse was decommissioned and sold in 1903, undergoing various transformations, including serving as a tea room and residence. During World War II, it suffered damage from artillery fire. In 1999, to prevent coastal erosion from undermining its foundation, the 850-ton structure was moved 17 meters inland using hydraulic jacks. Today, Belle Tout Lighthouse operates as a bed and breakfast, offering guests panoramic views of the English Channel and the Seven Sisters cliffs. (belletout.co.uk)
