## Hero of Waterloo Hotel

Established in 1843 by Scottish-born stonemason George Paton, the Hero of Waterloo Hotel is one of Sydney's oldest continuously operating pubs. Constructed from sandstone quarried from the nearby Argyle Cut, the hotel was first licensed in 1845. Its clientele included crews from whaling and sealing vessels, as well as colonial garrison troops. The building's design features convict-hewn sandstone walls and heavy timber beams, evoking the rough mariner’s life. Over the years, the hotel has undergone minimal alterations, preserving its original form and character. Today, it remains a popular venue, offering live music, a well-stocked bar, and a unique cellar museum tour showcasing its rich history. (dictionaryofsydney.org)
