## Peel Castle, St Patrick's Isle
In 1098, Viking King Magnus Barefoot established a wooden fort on St Patrick's Isle, marking the beginning of Peel Castle's history. By the early 14th century, the fortifications were rebuilt in local red sandstone, enhancing their durability. The castle also housed the Cathedral of St German, constructed in the 12th century, which later served as a prison in the 17th century. Archaeological excavations between 1982 and 1987 uncovered an extensive graveyard and the remains of Magnus Barefoot's original wooden fort. Among the significant finds was the 10th-century grave of the "Pagan Lady," which included a fine example of a Norwegian necklace and a cache of silver coins dating from about 1030. (en.wikipedia.org) Today, Peel Castle stands as a testament to the Isle of Man's rich Viking heritage.
