## Braemar Castle

Braemar Castle, constructed in 1628 by John Erskine, 18th Earl of Mar, was designed as a hunting lodge and to assert dominance over the Farquharson clan. The castle's strategic location near Braemar village in Aberdeenshire allowed it to control access through the Cairngorms to Strathspey and the pass of Glen Derry. (britainexpress.com) During the Jacobite risings, it served as a garrison for Hanoverian troops. In 1831, the military withdrew, and the Farquharson clan restored it as a family home. Today, Braemar Castle is managed by a local charitable foundation and is open to the public. (braemarcastle.co.uk)
