## Gad's Hill Place
In 1856, Charles Dickens purchased Gad's Hill Place in Higham, Kent, for £1,790, fulfilling a childhood dream. He had first seen the house at nine, walking with his father, and was captivated by its grandeur. Dickens made significant improvements, including installing bookshelves in his study and commissioning a Swiss chalet for his garden, where he wrote many of his later works. He died there in 1870. The house became Gad's Hill School in 1924 and remains a Grade I listed building. (en.wikipedia.org)
