## Ypres Tower
In 1249, King Henry III commissioned the construction of a fortified tower in Rye, known as Baddings Tower, to bolster the town's defences against French incursions. By 1430, the tower was acquired by Jean d'Ypres, a cloth merchant from Ypres, leading to its renaming as Ypres Tower. Over the centuries, it has served various roles, including a prison from 1495 until 1891, a courthouse, and even a women's prison established in 1837. Today, Ypres Tower is part of the Rye Castle Museum, offering visitors insights into Rye's rich history through its exhibits and preserved architecture. (ryecastle.co.uk)
