## Eaton Socon Cage
In 1825, Eaton Socon's vestry ordered the construction of a lock-up, or "Cage," to detain local offenders awaiting magistrate hearings in Bedford. Completed in 1827, this two-cell structure featured a bench and chains for restraint. Adjacent to it, a fire engine house was added in 1831, housing a horse-drawn fire engine. The Cage remained in use until the late 19th century, with occasional escapes, such as one in 1858 where a prisoner created a two-foot square hole in the brickwork. Today, the Cage stands as a rare example of a rural lock-up, located on School Lane in Eaton Socon, near St Mary's Church. (stneotsmuseum.org.uk)
