## Hardwick Hall

In 1590, Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, commissioned the construction of Hardwick Hall, a grand Elizabethan mansion designed by architect Robert Smythson. Completed in 1597, the house is renowned for its expansive windows, leading to the saying, "Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall." After Bess's death in 1608, the estate passed to her son, William Cavendish, 1st Earl of Devonshire. The Cavendish family made Chatsworth House their principal seat, relegating Hardwick Hall to a secondary role. In the 20th century, Hardwick Hall was transferred to the National Trust in 1959, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, it stands as a testament to Elizabethan architecture and remains open to the public.
