In 1852, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) began as the Museum of Manufactures, established to promote design excellence following the Great Exhibition of 1851. Initially located at Marlborough House, it relocated to South Kensington in 1857, adopting the name South Kensington Museum. In 1899, Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone for new buildings along Exhibition Road, and the museum was renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in her honour.
