In 1826, New York City transformed a former potter's field into the Washington Military Parade Ground, a space designated for militia training. By 1827, the area was officially declared a public square, and the surrounding neighborhood evolved into a fashionable residential district. In 1889, to commemorate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration, a temporary arch was erected; its popularity led to the construction of a permanent marble arch in 1892, designed by architect Stanford White. The park has long been a hub for cultural and political activities, hosting gatherings for artists, activists, and musicians.
