In 1886, Edinburgh Castle ceased its role as a military garrison, marking a significant shift in its history. The Great Hall, originally completed in 1511 for King James IV, had been repurposed as a barracks and later a military hospital. Following the departure of the troops, the Hall underwent restoration, returning to its medieval splendour. This period also saw the construction of the Argyll Tower over the Portcullis Gate and the building of a new Gatehouse in 1888. The castle's transformation into a national monument began, with the Honours of Scotland—the nation's crown jewels—rediscovered in 1818 and displayed to the public. By the early 20th century, the castle had become a focal point for Scottish heritage, attracting visitors and serving as a symbol of national pride. (edinburghcastle.scot)
