A little history of Exeter
Exeter, Devon, England
Exeter, located in Devon, England, has a rich history spanning over two millennia. Founded by the Romans around AD 50 as Isca Dumnoniorum, it became a significant military and administrative centre. After the Roman withdrawal, Exeter experienced periods of decline and resurgence, notably under Saxon control in the 7th century. The city's fortifications were strengthened by Alfred the Great in the 9th century to defend against Viking invasions.
A pivotal landmark in Exeter is the Guildhall, situated on the High Street. Established by 1000 AD, it has served as the city's civic centre for centuries. The current structure, dating from 1468 to 1470, features a distinctive portico added in the 1590s. The Guildhall has functioned as a court, prison, and market hall, reflecting Exeter's evolving civic life.
Throughout its history, Exeter has been a hub of commerce, culture, and governance, with landmarks like the Guildhall symbolising its enduring legacy.
