A little history of Arromanches-les-Bains
Arromanches-les-Bains
Arromanches-les-Bains, commonly known as Arromanches, is a commune in the Calvados department of Normandy, France. Its history dates back to at least the 12th century, with archaeological evidence indicating Roman presence through the discovery of an aqueduct. In the 18th century, the area was noted for the ruins of a coastal castle.
In the mid-19th century, Arromanches transformed from a fishing village into a popular seaside resort, attracting both local and Parisian visitors. This period saw the construction of numerous villas, many of which still stand today.
During World War II, Arromanches played a pivotal role in the Allied invasion of Normandy. The Allies established one of the two artificial Mulberry harbors here, facilitating the rapid offloading of troops and supplies. Remnants of this harbor remain visible off the coast, serving as a testament to the town's significant contribution to the war effort.
